Neil McGill is a self-taught artist based in Linlithgow, Scotland.

A software engineer by day, Neil began experimenting with acrylic paints as a hobby almost 20 years ago, and soon fell in love with the medium. Initially inspired by the vivid colours and impressionist styles of artists like Van Gogh, he eventually came to find his own signature style, bursting with colour and loose, natural forms.

Many of his pieces are inspired by the rolling landscapes (and the sheep!) of Scotland, which he missed dearly while living abroad for 15 years – hence, Lost Scotsman Art.

In addition to acrylic paints, Neil enjoys using other mediums such as acrylic ink, glitter, and gold paint pens to create shining multi-layered tableaus.

He enjoys working on pieces of all shapes and sizes, from 1ft squares all the way up to wall-size statement pieces.

Big canvases don’t come cheap, though, so he often works on reclaimed canvases – whether that be thrift-flipped canvases from charity shops, old kitchen cabinet doors, or once, a 6 x 8 ft sheet of plywood!

In 2025, Neil officially retired from software engineering, and has been filling his days (and walls!) with more art than ever.

His unofficial art studio is situated in a corner of the garage, using an old table-top for an eisel. He especially likes to paint in the early mornings, while blasting electronic music and retro chiptune beats.
